Bollywood icon Sri Devi passes away at 54 after a cardiac arrest in Dubai

Bollywood icon Sridevi, loved by millions for her roles in movies like “English Vinglish”, “Chandni” and “Khuda Gwah”, died of a cardiac arrest in Dubai,

where she had gone to attend the wedding of actor and relative Mohit Marwah.

Having a career which expanded for over four decades, Bollywood’s Veteran actress Sridevi passed away at the age of 54.  The actor, the wife of producer Boney Kapoor, died late in the night reportedly due to cardiac arrest in Dubai, where she had gone along with her family to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding.

Those expressive eyes and the mischievous smile sent hearts aquiver and lit up the cinema screens, making Sridevi Bollywood’s first female superstar.

The 54-year-old, who had taken a long break from the movies after her marriage to Boney Kapoor, had returned to the silver screen six years ago with “English Vinglish” and worked in three films since.

In an industry dominated by male superstars, Sridevi reversed the trend by her sheer acting prowess. Her name, most of the times, was a guarantee enough for a film’s success.

regardless of flawless and dignified said Subhash Ghai,

who was her director in ‘Karma’ in 1986 when Sridevi was still finding her foothold in Bollywood.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences. “Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi. She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in peace,” he said.’

Over a five-decade career, the actor who made her debut on the silver screen at the age of four in Tamil movie Thoonaivan had worked in 300 films.

In an impressive career spanning five decades, the actor ruled the commercial cinema space

in the ’80s and ’90s like no heroine had done before.

She made her entry in Bollywood in 1975 with the blockbuster romance Julie but had also ruled the Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada film industry. In 2013, she received Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award.

The actress made her Bollywood debut in 1979 with “Solva Sawan” (16th spring), but she made her mark in the Hindi film industry with the film “Sadma”.
